8 Jan 2025 – International Science Youth Forum (ISYF) 2025

Associate Professor Hou has returned to Hwa Chong Institute as one of the Masterclass Speakers for the 17th International Science Youth Forum (ISYF)! ISYF brings together young science enthusiasts worldwide to share their passion for research and technology while fostering lasting friendships. This year’s theme, “Innovation Unified: Towards a Better Future,” highlights the power of collaboration in tackling global challenges through groundbreaking ideas. We hope the students have an amazing time learning about our research work. Here’s what he has covered during the session:
Microfluidics and Healthcare: The Tiny Technology with a BIG Future
Blood is a highly complex biofluid which contains a myriad of information about a person’s health and medical conditions. Due to the vast cellular background, gentle and efficient sample preparation is critical for liquid biopsy and blood-based diagnostics. Microfluidics (aka lab-on-a-chip) technologies are powerful analytical tools as they offer unprecedented detection resolution and sensitivity with potential for automation for clinical adoption. In this talk, I will give an introduction on microfluidics and highlight different microfluidics solutions we have developed recently for blood fractionation, single cell biophysical profiling, and organ-on-chips models for cardiovascular diseases. We envision these scalable platform technologies can facilitate rapid blood analysis of immune and vascular health towards the development of low-cost hematoanalyzers and point-of-care immunoassays. Lastly, I will also share some insights on the importance of establishing strong collaboration among engineers, biologists and clinicians to pursue these interdisciplinary research topics.
